  Dior Alfred

All I could do was stand there with my mouth dropped and wide, watery eyes as Jashawn’s car disappeared. No matter how much I called out to him, he wasn’t trying to hear me, and I didn’t understand why.

For the whole day, I had prepared myself for this meeting—shit the whole week I prepared—and it ended before I even got the chance to know why.

What the hell is going on?

I honestly believed that if there were going to be any issues between Jashawn and my parents, it would have been with my mother, but not my dad! I didn’t expect that, and as I stood there thinking about that fact, I turned on my heels and stormed back into my parents’ house for some answers.

“You just couldn’t help yourself, could you?” I barked at my dad, who was now pacing the floor and mumbling to himself.

I had no idea what issue he had with Jashawn, or how they even came to know each other, but I knew that my dad caused him to leave. And, for that, he had some explaining to do.

My outburst caused him to look up at me with a scowl on his face.

“What the hell are you doing with that boy?” he yelled back.

“Just one night! I only asked for one night for you to put your pride aside and meet him for me, and you couldn’t even do that!”

It was no secret that my parents were not interested in me being with any man other than James from the moment we broke up, but after they both agreed that Shawn could come for Christmas, they promised me that they would try to get to know him.

“Dior, I don’t want you seeing that boy anymore. You have no idea who he is!”

“Yes, I do—it’s you who I don’t know! I expected this from Mama, but not you!”

He immediately grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me toward him, catching me off guard.

“Wait, let’s talk about this!” my mama called out and touched my dad’s shoulder, but he just brushed her off him.

“I said, I don’t want you anywhere near that boy ever again! You have no idea who the hell that is or what you’re dealing with. He’s dangerous, Dior. His whole family is!”

His words caused confusion to rise up inside of me.

“How do you know him, Dad?” I frowned as I peered into his eyes. Eyes that were cold, wide, and emotionless—a look I had never seen my dad have before.

He looked away from my face for a second before his gaze moved back to me.

“Just stay away from him, Dior. Please. Promise me that you will.” He slightly shook me. “I’m telling you this for your own safety.”

“Safety?” I whispered. “Dad, Jashawn would never hurt me.”

He looked at me like I had lost my mind or something, but that was the truth. Maybe in the beginning when I first encountered Jashawn, I knew that he was willing to do anything to keep my mouth closed. But, now that I started to get to know him, I knew he wouldn’t hurt me. That night I found him in the back of my car, and I brought him home, I started to see another side to him. A side that let me know I had nothing to worry about.

And as I started to spend more time with him, I started to feel that with him, I would always be safe. I knew all about Jashawn and what he did with his family—hell, that’s how our paths crossed in the first place—but I didn’t allow that to stop me from seeing that he was so much more than that.

I just didn’t know how my dad knew him. I thought, until it clicked.

“You’re investigating him, aren’t you?” His lack of response let me know that I was right. “Daddy, no! You can’t!”

Damn, this was worse than I originally thought. I was involved with a man who my father was trying to get locked up!

Tears fell from my eyes when I realized that our paths crossed long before I had met him.

“Daddy, please,” I begged, and he let my shoulders go.

“You gonna beg and cry for a thug like that? He’s dangerous and a poison!”

“No, he isn’t, Daddy, and if you would just—”

He backed up away from me—recoiling his body like I was a snake about to pounce or something—and shook his head at me.

“I know damn well you weren’t about to tell me to get to know someone like him.”

  “But if you would—”

“NEVER!” he roared, and this time I took a step back.

“I will never get to know a piece of scum like that boy! Now, I forbid you from having any further contact with him, Dior, and you better not go against my word or you won’t like what I will do.”

From his words, I took that as an underlining threat to more than just me.

“Kevin, please, we can talk about this,” my mama made another attempt to calm my father down.

Although I was grateful that, for once, my mother was trying to be the voice of reason. From my father’s face, I could see that he had already made up his mind.

Seeing that no matter what I said, he wasn’t going to listen, I let it go but not before saying, “Were you any different?”

My dad’s eyes widened from my words, and his mouth opened, but nothing came out. Even my mama was stunned by what I said because her head snapped around to look at me.

Cutting my eyes away from my dad, I snatched up my purse and stormed out of their house with my mama calling out behind me.

As soon as I jumped into my car, more tears poured down my flushed cheeks. This cannot be happening? How was I falling for a man who my dad was trying to destroy? And, most importantly, how did we get past that?

Wiping my face, I started my car and drove away from my parents’ house while I tried to call Jashawn’s phone.<

After calling him back to back four times and not getting him, my stomach knotted when it dawned on me that we were done.

  Pharaoh ‘Legion’ Morse

A’Moya and I stood face to face, staring into each other’s eyes, after the words I vowed never to utter fell from my lips.

What I revealed was what had been haunting my dreams since the day I did the unthinkable. Nobody but God knew why I said that I was damaged or about the demons I had carried around with me since I was twelve-years-old. I had taken the life of the woman who birthed me. It didn’t get more fucked up than that!

A’Moya’s eyes searched my face for a lie she thought that I was telling, but I wasn’t. This was my truth, my reality.

Even though I knew there was nothing that she could say from the bomb I dropped on her, I frantically stared back at her, waiting for anything to come out of her mouth. My mind told me to tell her who I was so that she could walk away and save herself from dealing with a person like me. But, as soon as the words left my mouth, I wanted to desperately take them back if it meant not seeing the look that was on her face now.

The look of shock, horror, and fear clouded her beautiful face, and I felt my heart speed up at the realization that I was about to lose her.

  But I had to tell her… didn’t I?

  “A’Moya?”

Her eyes fell to my lips and then went back up to my eyes. She opened her mouth, and I waited, expecting something to come out, but nothing did.

When I felt her body move back away from me, I immediately wanted to pull her back to, but I knew that would only make her pull away from me more or maybe scare her.

With a sigh, I took a step back and dropped my head.

“How, Pharaoh… why?” she uttered in a shaky voice, causing my head to lift.

I stared at her with so much to say but not knowing where to even begin. My eyes closed, and I started to tell her my horrible truth as my mind took me to the day Pharaoh died, and Legion was born.

  “Pharaoh, get up!”

I was violently shaken awake, and my eyes popped open to see my dad glaring down at me.

Shifting in my bed, I wiped my face and eyes so that I could see him clearly. Taking a quick look around, I saw that it was morning, which let me know that it was finally Christmas morning.

A smile covered my face, but it quickly fell when I saw that my dad wasn’t smiling. He very rarely did, but I thought that since it was Christmas, he would make an exception.

  “Get up.”

He roughly pulled the comforter off my body, and I quickly got out of my bed, knowing that he wasn’t going to ask me twice.

  “Get dressed and come downstairs.”

I nodded to his demand, and he was out of the door before I could blink.

Sighing, I quickly went into the bathroom to have a shower and brush my teeth. Once I was dressed in the black sweat suit that I found resting on my bed, I happily skipped down the stairs.

I walked into the living room, expecting to see a tree, presents, or even Christmas decorations but frowned when I saw that there were none. This is why I wanted to go home for Christmas, I sadly thought.

Since my dad had taken me from my mother two years ago, I would go back and spend the holidays with her, but, for some reason, this year, my dad chose not to send me. I had seen my mom for Thanksgiving, but that was the last time I saw her. My dad didn’t even allow me to call her anymore.

I looked around the room again before my eyes landed on my dad, who was sitting on the couch peering at me.

“I know what you’re looking for, but you won’t find that here. Christmas is for pussies! All that love, family time, and giving of presents is for soft ass motherfuckers, and I’m not raising a bitch. Do you hear me?”

Even though I didn’t agree with a single word that came from his mouth, the black eye that was just healing reminded me what happened when I disagreed with him, so I simply nodded.

“The world is a fucked up place, Pharaoh, and I will not have you getting sucked in and brainwashed by the bullshit it has motherfuckers doing. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Valentine’s Day—it’s all bullshit! Love is an illness. You hear me, boy?”

I nodded again as he continued to glare at me, looking like a black devil with low, red eyes and almost foaming at the mouth. My dad tried to hide it, but I knew he was doing some type of drugs. His anger and constant outbursts showed me that he was.

As I looked into his angry eyes, I knew that my dad was high—on what, I didn’t know.

“Let’s go,” he said and stood to his feet.

I almost smiled, knowing he was taking me to my mother.

He walked out of the house, and I happily followed him. We climbed into his car, and it stayed silent the whole time he drove, which was the usual. We never spoke to each other, ever.

I excitedly looked out of the window, happy that I was going to see my mom, but that excitement left when I realized that my dad wasn’t going to my mother’s house. Knowing now that he was taking me to train, I sighed. All we did was train—morning, noon, and night. I never got a rest; no matter how tired I was, my dad would just push me until I could barely move.

My head dropped, and my eyes closed when he pulled up to the wooded area that he had me practicing in.

“Out.” My dad tapped my leg, and I quickly climbed out.

I followed him to the warehouse, and he suddenly stopped and turned to look at me. He didn’t say anything as I looked up to him and then we went inside.

My eyes shot open wide, and I gasped when I walked in and saw my mother tied to a chair in the middle of the warehouse. A gag covered her mouth and muffled her pleas as she cried out to me.

I ran over and threw my arms around her.

“Momma! Momma!” I tried with all my little strength to loosen her, but I couldn’t.

Her tears were flowing down her face as fast as mine were.

When I couldn’t loosen the rope that had her bound, I tried to bite at it with my teeth, but that didn’t work either. Knowing only my dad could set her free—since he must have been the one to do it—I turned to look at him.

He just stood there smirking at us, looking like the devil I came to know he was.

“Dad,” I pleaded, and he chuckled.

  “Come here, Pharaoh.”

I looked back at my mother first before walking over to where he was. He put his hands on my shoulder and bent down to look me in the eyes.

“I’m doing this for your own good, Pharaoh. This will make you stronger.”

  “What will make me stronger?”

I was confused and scared. How was my mother being tied up for my own good and going to make me stronger?

Instead of elaborating further, my dad walked over to my mother and stood behind her chair. I watched as she whimpered under my father’s touch as he stroked her hair.

“Sooo beautiful. Isn’t she?” my dad asked while looking down at my mother.

“Yes,” I answered, and he nodded.

My mother was the epitome of beauty—she was that inside and out. She was the most loving person I had ever known. Even when we were alone, my mother worked hard just to make sure I had food to eat and paid for me to go to the best school.

Everything she did was for me.

There were not enough words to describe how much I loved my mother, and I was so thankful that I looked just like her with the fair complexion, wavy hair, hazel eyes, and full, pink lips.

My dad took the gag from her mouth.

“Percy, please don’t do this,” my mother begged, and my dad just shushed her.

“A beautiful woman like this will destroy a man like you, Pharaoh. Just like she almost destroyed me. I almost lost my way falling into her web, and then she had you.”

My breathing sped up as I started to wonder where he was going with all that he was saying and doing. The fact that my mother was begging him let me know that she knew what he was going to do.

Women are a distraction, Pharaoh. Always have been and always will be. Even now, she distracts you with this poison called love, Christmas, and all that shit she’s been doing to make you soft.”

  “No, Percy, please!”

My eyes darted back and forth between my parents as my little underdeveloped mind tried to make sense of what was going on around me.

After telling my mother to be quiet, my dad walked over and stood behind me.

“There’s no room in this world for distractions, Pharaoh. Do you understand? Nothing but money makes the world go ’round. We don’t need love because it does nothing but deter us from our destinies, so it’s our right to remove all that will distract us.” He bent down and whispered in my ear as his hands massaged my young shoulders.

“I don’t understand,” I said, and he chuckled.

I gasped when my dad held a gun in front of my face before dropping it into my hands.

“Kill her, Pharaoh,” he instructed me, and I spun around to face him.

  “What?”

“You heard me, kill her now, or I will kill you.”

The sound of my mother breaking down caused fresh tears to slide down my face.

“Dad, I can’t. Please don’t make me do this.”

He angrily snarled, “This is what I’m talking about! Tears! Men don’t fucking cry!”

My head jerked to the left when he sent a fierce slap to my face.

“Percy, stop it!” my mother screamed.

“Shut the fuck up!” he yelled back at her.
